A curvier, bigger booty is one of the more sought-after body aesthetics of the past few years. While some women are blessed with this look because of genetics, many people need a bit of help to boost their curves. That’s where a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) comes in. If you want fuller, shapelier buttocks and you’re considering buttock augmentation, you have a few options. However, the most popular and fastest-growing of these options is the BBL.

Dr. David Morales is a highly respected, board-certified plastic surgeon dedicated to producing excellent BBL results in Dallas, Texas, without compromising safety.

What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A Brazilian Butt Lift is a cosmetic surgery that uses excess fat harvested from your own body to augment your backside. The procedure, also known as fat grafting or fat transfer, is designed to give you a more defined hourglass figure, using liposuction to slim your waist and using that fat to enhance your hips and buttocks.

What Are the Benefits of a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Boost in Body Confidence

If you are self-conscious about having a small behind or want to balance your proportions, a BBL can help. You can enhance your curves and finally have the sexy figure you’ve been wanting.

Natural Buttock Augmentation

While silicone buttock implants are available, they typically require a more invasive surgery that includes a longer recovery time and more scarring than Brazilian Butt Lift surgery. Plus, a BBL uses fat from your own body, giving you an all-natural augmentation with no risk of allergies, rejection, or other potential side effects of butt implants.

Eliminating Excess Fat Elsewhere on Your Body

Many people choose to combine cosmetic procedures for even better results, but in the case of a BBL, the benefits of liposuction are built right in. You can choose the spot or spots on your body where the excess fat used in your Brazilian Butt Lift will be removed, slimming problem areas while simultaneously boosting your behind.

Lasting Results

Because BBL surgery uses your own fat, your results will last as long as you maintain a stable weight.

Am I a Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?

To be a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift, you should meet the following qualifications:

  • Be in good overall health: You should not have serious health problems, such as uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiac issues. You should also be able to discontinue blood thinners temporarily.
  • Be at or close to your ideal weight: Maintaining a healthy and stable weight is crucial, as fluctuations will affect your results. That being said, the BBL is a fat grafting surgery, and you must have adequate fat stores for use in the procedure. This fat can be collected from one or more areas, including the abdomen, waist, thighs, and back.
  • Be a non-smoker: Tobacco use increases the risks of excessive bleeding and blood clots, so avoid all nicotine products for four weeks before and after your Brazilian Butt Lift.
  • Be sure of your desire for more prominent buttocks: You should want fuller and more pronounced buttocks and not be considering the procedure to meet someone else’s expectations.
  • Have realistic expectations: While BBL results can be dramatic, your expectations should be realistic. Dr. Morales will listen carefully to your goals and create a treatment plan to help you achieve them. He will also explain the process of fat resorption after a BBL, where your body metabolizes some of the transferred fat (up to 30%). Because of this, Dr. Morales will transfer a larger volume of fat than what is needed and desired for the final results.

How Is a Brazilian Butt Lift Performed?

There are two primary steps involved in a Brazilian Butt Lift. The first is collecting the fat from one area of the body, and the second is transferring it to the buttocks. General anesthesia is typically used for BBL procedures, but in cases where only a small increase in buttock size is desired, local anesthesia may be an option.

Dr. Morales will begin your BBL procedure by using liposuction to remove fat from the abdomen, hips, or thighs. Tiny incisions are made in the skin, and a thin cannula is inserted into the fatty area. A medical suction device is connected to the cannula, vacuuming the unwanted fat into a sterilized container.

The harvested fat is then processed through a centrifuge, separating the fat from the tumescent liposuction fluid and other impurities so that only the strongest and purest fat cells remain. These fat cells are placed into a syringe and carefully and precisely injected into several areas of the buttocks.

The complete procedure usually takes between two and three hours.

What Can I Expect From My Brazilian Butt Lift Recovery?

After your Brazilian Butt Lift surgery, you will experience bruising and mild soreness that can last up to two weeks. Prescription or over-the-counter pain medication will typically control any discomfort.

The most important thing to be aware of as you recover from your BBL is that the freshly transferred fat cells are initially very delicate as they settle into place and connect to a new blood supply that will keep them viable. Because of this, you must avoid sitting or laying on your back for at least two weeks, if not longer. Placing pressure on your backside too soon can cause a higher volume of fat cells to be reabsorbed into your body, adversely affecting your results.

Dr. Morales will give you detailed instructions for your recovery, including how to carefully sit when necessary to best protect the newly grafted fat. You may wish to invest in a specialized BBL pillow or donut-shaped nursing pillow so that you can be supported without placing excess pressure on the buttocks. You will need to use support when sitting for at least eight weeks after surgery or until cleared by Dr. Morales.

You will experience swelling both on your buttocks and in the area(s) where you received liposuction. Swelling will likely persist for several weeks, and Dr. Morales will require you to sleep on your side or stomach until you are completely healed.

What Results Can I Expect From My BBL?

You will see some immediate results from your Brazilian Butt Lift, though they will likely be obscured by swelling. Most swelling should dissipate within two to three months after your BBL surgery. However, it can take up to six months after a BBL procedure for all of the swelling to disappear and the extra fat to be reabsorbed.

Once the swelling has subsided and the initial fat is absorbed, your Brazilian Butt Lift results should reveal a more prominent, shapely, and firm rear end that makes you look sexier both in and out of clothing. Because the fat used for the procedure is typically taken from the midsection (including the abdomen and waist) and transferred to the buttocks (and maybe even to the lateral thighs), a BBL often results in a highly desirable hourglass silhouette.

Your BBL results are considered permanent; however, they are easily affected by weight fluctuations—-both gains and losses. It is essential to maintain a stable weight following your BBL.

What Are Some Frequently Asked Questions About a Brazilian Butt Lift?

What if I don’t have enough fat for a BBL? Do I have other options?

In most cases, Brazilian Butt Lift patients have enough fat in other areas of their bodies that can be used to augment their buttocks. However, if you genuinely do not have enough excess body fat for the procedure, buttock augmentation using silicone implants is an option.

Can I have a second BBL?

Yes. Sometimes, you can do everything right—-from choosing an experienced surgeon to following recovery protocols to the letter—-and your BBL results still aren’t as you’d hoped. In this case, you may choose to have an additional BBL procedure. Some of the reasons for a revision BBL could include the following:

  • Your results are asymmetrical
  • Your buttock contours are irregular and need to be evened out
  • Not enough fat was able to survive, leaving you with a smaller butt than you expected
  • You wish to further enhance your behind

If you do decide to undergo an additional Brazilian Butt Lift, it is recommended that you wait at least six months after your initial procedure, and ideally up to a year.

What risks are associated with a Brazilian Butt Lift?

While BBL is a safe and effective procedure when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, there are risks involved. Choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon helps ensure that proper safety precautions are taken to prevent serious complications from arising. Some of the potential risks of a BBL include:

  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Bumps, lumps, and cysts
  • Fat embolism (this is the most serious of possible complications)

If you experience any of the above side effects or have questions during your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact our office.
