Liposuction is a body-sculpting procedure to remove fat deposits that are to diet and exercise resistant. This procedure can be applied to nearly any area of the body and is commonly used on multiple areas during an operation. Liposuction results in a slimmer and better proportioned figure. Liposuction is used effectively to reduce unsightly fat deposits in order to develop a better shape and create a more beautiful body.
Liposuction is considered to eliminate fat from any of the following areas:
- Chin and Neck
- Upper Arms
- Stomach and Waistline
- Hips and Buttocks
- Love handles (Flanks)
- Thighs and Knees
- To create a better proportioned silhouette.
Liposuction is a very popular and powerful surgical technique to eliminate problem fatty areas and recontour your body. When we gain weight, our fatty tissues expand as they store all those extra calories as fat in cells in our belly, love-handles, thighs, and neck. However we all have our specific problem areas that tend to store most of our extra pounds in a disproportionate way. Some people gain more easily on their thighs, where others have thin legs and gain all their weight on their backside.
Whatever your specific situation may be, liposuction is an excellent tool to permanently eliminate these focal areas of concern. It should be understood that liposuction is not meant to replace a weight loss plan. Liposuction is best used as a targeted surgery to eliminate fat in those areas of the body where your exercise and diet don’t seem to have an effect. By focusing your attention on problem areas, you are bound to have a more positive outcome.
Some patients have a hard time starting their weight loss plan or feel too overwhelmed because they don’t know where to begin. Liposuction can sometimes be helpful as a motivational “kick start” to get your weight loss going. If we target your more difficult or problematic areas with liposuction, we can get you going on your path to a healthier smaller you.
In all cases, a long metal rod (“cannula”) is inserted through tiny incisions, which helps break up fat cells for removal. Liposuction may be performed on the chin and neck, back, upper arms, stomach, hips, buttocks, flanks (“love handles”), and/or thighs.
Techniques for body contouring vary and include the following:
- Traditional Liposuction: vacuum suction is used to extract fat cells from the body using small cannulas
- Ultrasonic and VASER Liposuction: ultrasonic waves are used to break and liquefy fat, while preserving all other tissues to improve a smooth result and rapid healing
- Laser Liposuction or Smartlipo: heat from a laser is used to tighten skin and break up and liquify fat cells to improve smooth results.
The technique used will vary depending on each patient’s need, however the age of the patient, the quality and density of fat as well as the quality of the patient’s skin, their elasticity, stretch marks and other scars, will impact the final treatment plan. With any type of liposuction, the goal should be to visit with your plastic surgeon and determine which technique may best serve you. Each type has specific benefits and drawbacks that need to be matched with your needs.
The cost of liposuction varies depending on how many areas are to be treated and how long the surgery will take. These specifics can be discussed at length with your plastic surgeon before your surgery. Financing options are available as well, like CareCredit. The goal is to get the best treatment possible the first time and avoid costly revisions associated with cheap short cuts and noncertified practitioners.
Post-operative instructions call for rest and compression garments to assist in supporting the skin and minimizing bruising and swelling. Liposuction recovery is often short, usually a day surgery procedure with a recovery of just a few days off work. Larger volume liposuction in excess of approximately 4 liters should be considered for inpatient overnight observation. Pain is treated with oral medication and complications are rare, although patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following directions given by your doctor after the operation.
Liposuction, no matter what type, relies on the ability of your skin to shrink and contract.
That is to say, when you have liposuction, the fat is removed and the skin is deflated. In the days and weeks after your surgery, your skin will gradually tighten to match your new smaller size. Elastic compression garments are used to help support your skin after the surgery, and an ongoing exercise schedule and healthy diet can greatly enhance your results.
