It can be difficult to picture the exact outcome of breast augmentation, and personal preference often changes over time. Sometimes, breast augmentation does not go as planned, and a patient may begin to suffer from unforeseen post-operative complications. If you are unsatisfied with the results of a previous breast augmentation or have experienced any post-op difficulties, breast implant removal might be right for you. Ideal candidates for breast implant explantation have undergone breast augmentation in the past and can relate to at least one of the concerns below.

Medical Complications

While rare, some breast augmentation patients can experience complications with their implants, causing discomfort, unhappiness, and even severe pain. Breast implant explantation can correct the following issues:

  • Capsular Contracture: After any breast augmentation, a capsule of scar tissue will form around the implants. Sometimes, the capsule can become abnormally thick and tight, constricting the implant. The pressure caused by capsular contracture can distort the breasts and cause physical discomfort.
  • Implant Rupture: Rupture occurs when the integrity of the implant shell becomes compromised, which may be due to intense blunt force trauma or weakened shell material over time. When a saline implant ruptures, it deflates, making detection easy. Silicone implant ruptures must be identified using an MRI.

What Dr. Morales Can Do

Dr. Morales can adopt one of the following approaches to remove your compromised implants and best address your issues:

  • Removal of the implant only: In cases where there is no significant scar tissue, Dr. Morales can take out the implants and leave the surrounding tissue intact.
  • Total capsulectomy: For patients suffering from capsular contracture, a total capsulectomy is highly recommended. Dr. Morales removes the breast implant first and then removes any surrounding scar tissue (the capsule).
  • En bloc capsulectomy: If possible, Dr. Morales will remove the implant and capsule together as one piece. This approach is often recommended for ruptured implants.

Implant Displacement

When an initial breast augmentation surgery is not carried out with meticulous care and expert precision, patients may experience implant displacement, such as:

  • Synmastia: This type of complication occurs when a surgeon creates a breast pocket that is too large for the implants, causing the implants to migrate toward each other. Synmastia compromises breast augmentation results, and explantation can be an effective solution.
  • Bottoming Out: When weak breast tissue cannot support overly large implants, bottoming out may occur. This condition is characterized by implants that have slipped below the natural breast crease, causing an abnormally heavy bottom pole of the breast.

What Can Dr. Morales Do?

Dr. Morales typically uses the original incisions from your initial breast augmentation to perform the explantation procedure, using several suturing techniques to repair and reinforce compromised breast tissue. The displaced implants are safely removed, and the inframammary crease may be reconstructed using sutures in the lower portion of the breast to strengthen weakened breast tissue. A breast lift or other breast enhancement procedure is performed to restore a perky, youthful appearance.

Change in Personal Preference

It’s completely normal for personal preferences and aesthetic tastes to change over time. Some women decide to remove their implants because their initial results no longer align with the way they perceive themselves. Changing the look of your breasts is your prerogative, so you can choose to remove them entirely or choose a different size or implant type years after your initial surgery:

  • Size: Some women may feel their implants are too large or too small and want to remove or replace them to achieve their ideal breast size. They can also choose implants of a different profile depending on their aesthetic goals.
  • Appearance: Women who opt for saline implants may be dissatisfied with wrinkling or rippling and decide to have them switched out for silicone implants or removed altogether.
  • Feel: Women who opt for saline implants may be dissatisfied with their less natural sensation. Silicone implants mimic natural breast tissue better than saline, so many breast revision patients will make the switch to silicone for a softer feel. Others may want a completely natural feel by removing the implants and opting for a lift instead.

What Dr. Morales Can Do

Using your previous incision sites, Dr. Morales can remove your implants and, if desired, replace them to provide you with the look and feel you desire.
